15/08/08 - The Mt. Isa Project
In 2004 at the
request of parents, Margaret from Dyslexia Testing Services, Brisbane office,
spent 4 days in Mt Isa assessing children to identify dyslexia or other learning
disabilities. This trip was fully funded by parents.
The
following year after the opening of our Townsville office, Sue travelled to Mt
Isa.
By 2006 our presence
in Mt Isa had been noted and the local Neighbourhood Centre began to raise funds
to subsidise annual trips for dyslexia testing. Our thanks go to Christine at the
Neighbourhood Centre for achieving funding from Xstrata Mining Company and
Sydney Myer Fund who have fully funded the trips to Mt Isa in 2007 and 2008. The
logistics of the trips are considerable, as whilst it is easy for Sue to hop on
a plane, the 20kg of assessment materials have to be freighted separately due to
weight limitations on the light aircraft. Our thanks to Sue for willingly
giving time, away from her family, for these trips.
We are very proud of
our initiative to provide City services to remote families and applaud the local
community for supporting us.
