18/05/07 Reading Recovery To Go
Minister for Education in Queensland, Rob Welford, has announced the phasing out of the Reading Recovery Program in Queensland over the next 2 years. Reasons given were that gains made by students when they completed the program were not maintained over time.
DTS applaud this action. For years we have been advising against using Reading Recovery (RR) for dyslexic students. Marie Clay, who developed RR in her initial research stated that the program was designed for students who need to catch up with their peers following a slow start. iwas never intended nor designed to support dyslexic students. What a pity no-one read the original research properly - all those milliions of dollars could have been put to better use.
