  • Use these checklists
  • Have your child assessed by a Specialist Teacher or Educational Psychologist.
  • Make sure that the professional you go to is specially trained in dyslexia. These are educational services not usually covered by any Medicare or Health Fund rebates. Expect to pay for this private service but remember it is essential if you want to get your child on the right track.
  • Most schools and teachers in Australia know little about dyslexia – it is not in their training. Do not expect the school or teachers to be the experts. They may even discourage you from investigating dyslexia.
The Disability Standards for Education 2005 require every school in Australia to support a child with dyslexia.
Legally they do not have a choice, it is covered by the Commonwealth Anti-Discrimination Act.

In Queensland - See EQ document regarding dyslexia

Education for children with a disabilty - A guide for parents
Disabilities that are not included in the EAP A few common conditions that don’t meet the criteria for targeted funding for students with disability include:
• learning disabilities (e.g. dyslexia)
• Attention Deficit Hyperactivity Disorder (ADHD).
However, all students who experience forms of learning disability are supported in Queensland state schools. The requirement for EQ (or any other education provider) to make reasonable adjustments for your child is based on a much broader definition of ‘disability’ (see ‘Legal rights’ on page 11). EQ recognises the importance of maximising educational outcomes for all students through identification and reduction of barriers to learning. If your child does not meet the verification requirements, the school will continue to work towards providing an appropriate program for your child.
